Slater Funeral Service History

1872

William Slater (1848-1932) Begins his career in funeral service with the Slater Funeral home in Mt. Washington on Virginia Ave (still there today). His oldest son John H. Slater, Sr., joined him in business, followed by his youngest son Raymond J. Slater, Sr. (whose heirs carry on the William Slater side of the funeral homes).

1903

John H. Slater, Sr. (1873-1944) Opens his own funeral home in Mt. Oliver on Brownsville Rd. His sons Herbert W. Slater and John H. Slater, Jr., joined him in business. Eventually, his grandson J. Fred Slater, Sr., started his career here.

1938

Herbert W. Slater (1903-1974) & John H Slater, Jr. (1907-1987) Open a branch funeral home at 4201 Brownsville Road in Brentwood (still there today). J. Fred Slater, Sr. (1930 – present) would eventually own the funeral home and his three sons, John, Stephen & Timothy, would begin their careers there.

1997

Stephen D. Slater (1957 – present) Opens Stephen D. Slater Funeral Home 1701 Route 51 in Large, where his son Drew H. Slater joined him in 2010.

2010

Timothy K. Slater (1961 – present) Opens Timothy K. Slater Funeral Service, Inc. In Mount Oliver on Brownsville Rd. (formerly Howard A. Farnsworth Funeral Home), bringing the Slater family back to serve the Mount Oliver area.

Currently, 10 heirs of William Slater have active Funeral Directors License
