Joseph M Scarlato

   Joseph M. Scarlato, age 77, of Clairton, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully with family by his side on Saturday, December 7, 2024, after a long battle with cancer. Born on February 27, 1947, he was preceded in death by his parents, Gabriel and Eula, and brother, Michael Scarlato. 

   A graduate of Clairton High School, he received a bachelor’s degree from Thiel College and a master’s degree from Duquesne University. While at Thiel College, he became a member of the Phi Theta Phi fraternity. Joseph spoke fondly of his time studying abroad in Madrid, Spain. He then went on to teach high school Spanish for 37 years, mostly at Thomas Jefferson High School. He was also a part-time professional videographer, an avid family photographer, and a member of Ascension of Our Lord Byzantine Catholic Church in Clairton.

   Joseph is survived by his wife of 46 years Paula (Barna) Scarlato; two children, son, Mark (Jennifer) Scarlato and daughter, Amy (William) Lynes; three grandchildren, Eva Scarlato, Victoria Lynes, and Joseph Lynes; nieces, Jessica Scarlato, Alexis Trubiani, Kelly Spaulding, and Hollie Barna; nephew, Alec Grech; sisters-in-law, Nancy Barna and Susan Barna; and brothers-in-law, Alexander Barna, Jr. and Ken Barna.

   Family and friends will be received on Thursday, December 12, 2024, from 2–4 and 6–8 p.m., with a Parastas service at 7 p.m., in the Stephen D. Slater Funeral Home, 1701 Route 51 Jefferson Hills, Pennsylvania 15025 www.stephendslater.com. On Friday, December 13, 2024, the Panachida will be at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home, followed by the Funeral Liturgy at 10:30 a.m. in Ascension of Our Lord Byzantine Catholic Church, 318 Park Avenue, Clairton, Pennsylvania 15025.
