Harvey D. Hess, age 97 of the Baldwin-Whitehall area in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, passed away on Saturday, February 1, 2025. Harvey was born in Pittsburgh on January 14, 1928, one of five children of Howard James and Vallie Gertrude (Ward) Hess.
He grew up in the Munhall area and graduated from Munhall High School in 1946. After 2 years of serving in the US Army during the Korean War, he married Dorothy June Gossett on January 22, 1953. They raised their 6 children in the Jefferson Hills and Pleasant Hills area. Harvey retired from the Convenience Store Industry, spending 20 years as Vice President and General Manager of Stop-N-Go Food Stores of Pittsburgh and 12 years on the Executive Committee of Sheetz, Inc of Altoona, Pennsylvania. Harvey was a proud member and actively involved in the Pleasant Hills Rotary serving the community and organization for over 57 years.
In addition to his parents, Harvey was preceded in death by daughter Darlene Frances Hess and 3 of his siblings, brothers Howard “Buss” Hess, Duane “Duke” Hess and Darrell Hess. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Dorothy; their 6 children, Harvey C. Hess of Chandler, Arizona, Gregory (Kimberly) Hess of Palm Springs, California, Keith (Gina) Hess of Orlando, Florida, Mary Beth (Joseph) Hallman of Batesburg, South Carolina, Christopher (Dianne) Hess of Jefferson Hills, Pennsylvania and Bradley (Cindy) Hess of Anna, Ohio; 16 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; his brother, Gary (Carolyn) Hess of Fort Mill, South Carolina and sister-in-law, Betty (late Darrell) Hess of West Mifflin, Pennsylvania.
Family and friends will be received on Thursday, February 6, 2025, from 4 – 8 pm in the Stephen D. Slater Funeral Home, 1701 Route 51, Jefferson Hills, PA 15025 (412-384-0350) www.stephendslater.com. His funeral service will be in the funeral home on Friday, February 7, 2025 at 12:30 pm and his burial will take place at 2:30 pm in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies in Bridgeville, Pennsylvania with Military Honors.
