DEACON GERARD COMO
Deacon Gerard “Gerry” Como, age 76 of Pleasant Hills, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, died Monday, November 8, 2021. Deacon Gerry was born on September 30, 1945. in McKeesport, Pennsylvania one of five children of Arthur John Como and Virginia Margaret (Meisl) Como.
He grew up in Glassport, Pennsylvania, graduated high school from The Saint Fidelis Seminary in Butler, Pennsylvania and graduated from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh with a Bachelor’s degree. He worked for over thirty years with the Department of Welfare in McKeesport, while also working part-time at Kadar’s Men’s Clothing Store. In his retirement, he became an Ordained Deacon in the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh in June of 2011. His duties included serving as an advocate in Marriage Tribunal and serving the parish and people of the churches of the Triumph of the Holy Cross.
Deacon Gerry was a lifelong Steelers season ticket holder, who loved gardening, especially his garlic. He was a bird enthusiast; he loved Jazz and Opera music; was an avid photographer and reader, especially reading his Bible daily. The loves of his life were his wife, his children, his grandchildren and ALL family!
He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur; a sister, Rose Slafka; a brother, Mark Como; a daughter-in-law, Trish (Snodgrass) Como; sister-in-law, JoAnn Russell and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Patricia and Joseph Petrick.
Deacon Gerry is survived by his mother, Virginia (97 years old); his beloved wife of over fifty four years, Sandi (Ruggier) Como; four children, David (Lynn) Como of South Park, Pennsylvania, Anthony (Laura) Como of Seven Fields, Pennsylvania, Dan (Dawn) Como of Jefferson Hills, Pennsylvania and Jenine (Ed) Wessel of Jefferson Hills; sixteen grandchildren, Elicia (Jake), Jordan, Sarah, Tyler, Mia, Aiden, Jack, Olivia, Cassidy, Jack, Evan, Ryan, Samuel, Cecelia and Cole; two siblings, sisters, Odilia “Dee” (Andy) Golembiewski and Anita Lepley; Sandi’s three sisters, Carol (Walt) Worek, Evelyn (Tom) Ficheria and Shelley (late Paul) Ruggier and many other loving family members.
Friends will be received in the Stephen D. Slater Funeral Home 1701 Route 51 Jefferson Hills, Pennsylvania 15025 (412 – 384 – 0350) www.stephendslater.com on Thursday, November 11, 2021, from 2 – 4 and 6 – 8 PM. There will be a prayer in the funeral home at 9 AM on Friday, November 12, 2021, followed by a 10 AM Mass of Christian Burial in Triumph of the Holy Cross Parish, St. Thomas a’ Becket Catholic Church, 139 Gill Hall Road Jefferson Hills, Pennsylvania 15025. Following the Mass, his burial will be at Round Hill Cemetery, Elizabeth, Pennsylvania 15037.
